WynBay LLEN would like to welcome Marion, our new Parents & Families Liaison Officer.

The role of the Parent & Families Liaison Officer is to identify the barriers and challenges local parents of secondary school students face being engaged in their child’s education, and to develop strategies to overcome these issues.

School Leavers Guide 2011

WynBay LLEN's School Leavers Guide 2011 was designed to provide school leavers with information to assist them achieve a smooth transition from school to further studies, training and or employment.

4000 copies of this publication were distributed to 17 secondary colleges across Wyndham and Hobsons Bay, for school leavers to take home at the end of the year and various service providers.

Hobsons Bay Business Excellence Awards 2011

WynBay LLEN was proud to sponsor and participate in the Hobsons Bay Excellence Awards 2011 which was held on Friday, 21 October.

Mayoral Youth Award

Wyndham Youth Services

Would you like to be awarded $500 to help you reach your goals? If you are aged between 12 - 25 years, now is the time to put in your application!!

The Mayoral Youth Award is a program operated by Wyndham City Youth Services that aims to:

  • Recognise the diverse range of personal and community achievement of local young people;
  • Assist young people to reach their goals;
  • Reward young people for their achievements and potential; and
  • Show community acknowledgment of the abilities and inherent within young people in the Wyndham community
  • The closing date for the September applications has been extended!!

Applications now close October 31st at 5:00 pm

Annual Student Exchange Program

Hobsons Bay International Friendship Association

Applications are sought from interested persons wishing to participate in a Student Exchange Program with the City of Anjo, Japan, for a two week period in July / August 2012.

To be eligible to apply students must be aged between 14 and 17 years of age and must reside in Hobsons Bay.  It is not a requirement when applying for this program, to be able to speak or be studying Japanese.

The successful applicants will be required to pay $1,000 towards the cost of the program and be expected to have an ongoing commitment with the Association.

Closing date for applications will be Friday, 4 November 2011.

Workplace Learning Update

Important dates for Term 4

YouthNow will be coordinating three special events to celebrate the year and to prepare for 2012. Important dates from the  Workplace Learning Coordination Program:

1.  2011 Employer Champion Awards

Nominations now OPEN and due Monday 14th November. Last year they had over 70 nominations from schools with 27 employers recognised for their ongoing support of work experience and work placement.

Happy Youth Mentoring Week - View our New Films Today

More than one hundred young people, mentors and supporters travelled from across the State to celebrate the launch of Youth Mentoring Week in Melbourne yesterday.

The Honourable Ryan Smith, Minister for Youth Affairs, presented the Mentor of the Year Award to Jeanne Winters of the L2P Leaner Driver Mentor Program in Geelong.

Some of youth mentoring's inspirational stories have been captured in a series of digital films. These brief digital stories illustrate the benefits of youth mentoring to young people and the commitment shown by mentors. You can watch these films on their website

More than 7,000 young people and 6.500 mentors from 233 programs across Victoria will continue to celebrate throughout the week. You can click here to find out what’s happening across Victoria.

ACCESS Program & Youth Connections

When: Commenced Monday 17th October, 2011. Duration 7 weeks, plus an additional 13 weeks intensive job search training.

Cadetship in Transport and Logistics

TDT Victoria is recruiting cadets for 2012. Completion of year 12 VCE or VCAL is the only requirement.

Cadets are employed by a business from the Transport and Logistics Industry and released from work to attend TAFE. Cadets complete a Certificate IV and then Diploma of Logistics over two years.

Certificate I in Automotive

Applications are now open

The course they provide is Certificate I in Automotive – giving training in Panel Beating, Spray Painting, Car Detailing, Motor Mechanics. The course duration is for 8 weeks.  Seven weeks are spent in their workshop with training in each area, with job search training also provided.  The final week is spent on a work trial, which will hopefully lead into an apprenticeship.  Each participant is offered ongoing job search support from our Employment Placement Consultant following the course.

Course dates:

  • 21st November – 16th December  (Course weeks 1-4)
  • 19th December – 13th January (Christmas/New Year break)
  • 16th January – 10th February (Course weeks 4-8)

If you know of any young people between the ages of 15 and 19 who may be interested in gaining their Certificate 1 in Automotive, please call Hand Brake Turn office on 9311 6273 and they will arrange to have an interview with them.

Multicultural Coastal Guides Course

Parks Victoria, in partnership with Fisheries Victoria’s Marine Discovery Centre and the Department of Planning and Community Development, are excited to announce the third round of the successful bilingual park tour guide program -  The Multicultural Coastal Guides Course.

When: 12, 13, 18, 19, & 20 November    
Where:
Marine Discovery Centre in Queenscliff

The aim of the course is to train culturally and linguistically diverse volunteers to lead their communities to discover parks. Parks offer many health benefits and Parks Victoria is keen to ensure that diverse communities are accessing parks and enjoying their many physical, social, mental and spiritual health benefits.

2012 Interpreter Scholarship Program

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC)

The Office of Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship (OMAC) is offering scholarships to suitable applicants enrolled in the Diploma of Interpreting at RMIT University in Melbourne.

Scholarship recipients will receive $2,000. This amount will cover the cost of the course fees for a Government-funded place in the course. The following languages are being targeted for 2012 - Dinka, Kirundi, Nepali, Oromo, Somali and Tedim (Chin). These languages are particularly relevant to the Sudanese, Burundian, Nepalese, Ethiopian, Somali, Burmese and Chin communities.

The RMIT courses are approved by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

Working for Success - Employment Conference

The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) and Youth Development Australia (YDA) invite you to a working conference on employment of young people from refugee and newly arrived backgrounds.

This all-day event will bring together apprenticeships groups, employers, trade unions, TAFE providers, government and community agencies to discuss barriers to employment for newly arrived young people from different perspectives, present effective models and investigate partnership opportunities.

When: Friday 28 October, 9.30am-4pm (registrations from 9am)
